What We Cannot Do

There are several common problems that we cannot fix.  In most of these cases  damage has occurred that is irreversible.  Please be aware of this, and do not expect your item to come back looking like new.  Age always shows on artifacts, but our focus is to preserve and stabilize them for the future.

  • Dark color.  We do not bleach yellowed or browned paper.  Most old documents do not get this treatment.  Remember that papers in museums are almost always brown.  We can refer you to a conservator if you want heavy restoration.  Keep in mind it would be much more expensive.
  • Stains from water, coffee, rust, ink and other liquids.  These have penetrated the entire paper and we cannot pull them out.
  • Tape marks.  We can remove most types of tape from paper, but we cannot remove set-in glue discoloration.  But please note that is still important to remove the tape.
  • Faded ink.  Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
  • Faded photographs.  They cannot be fixed, but an experienced photo studio can reproduce and restore much of the image (we have a subcontractor who may be able to help)
  • Some wrinkling.  We use relaxation treatments to unfold, unroll and generally flatten paper enough for framing or storage.  But we cannot give it an “ironed” look.  Too much pressure or heat application is bad for the paper.
  • Extensive baseball card restoration.  We cannot restore any image by adding color, paint or print.  We do not add; we only preserve what is left (with the exception of bridging paper holes for stabilization.)
  • Creation of memory books or scrapbooks.  We can color copy a collection and make simple binders if you want to have backups or give them to relatives.  We cannot make sophisticated albums or bound things, for example like the ones you may get from an event photographer.
